What is couples therapy for and when should you go?

What is couples therapy for? In the world of couples relationships, therapy stands out as a valuable and very useful tool to achieve understanding, (re)connection, conflict resolution, etc. In this article, we will explore what couples therapy entails, its fundamental objectives, and when is the right time to seek outside help.

In fact, couples therapy is also, in itself, a journey of self-discovery that can change the course of your relationship.

We will also answer some common questions and I will inform you of what you can expect from a session as well as the entire process.

So…

Couples therapy is a safe space guided by a psychologist or coach specialized in it. It focuses on strengthening the emotional connection , improving communication in order to address the challenges that may arise in the relationship as well as issues that may be very complex for the couple.

When to go to couples therapy?

If you experience difficulties in communication , a lack of emotional connection, a feeling of disinterest , emptiness, doubts, or more moments of ” recurring arguments ” than of enjoyment, for example, that would be a good time to consider therapy. In fact, very often, couples start doing sessions when it is already too late and try this step “the last cartridge”.

I like to draw parallels: It’s like when you want to take care of your diet: Don’t start doing it when your body can’t take it anymore. Let’s pay attention to our inner self so we can “prevent” it.

In a relationship, as far as possible, if you consider hiring the services of a coach, for example, do not wait until the problems become unbearable for both of you.

How does couples therapy work?
Couples therapy involves sessions guided by a specialized professional. Through conversation, questions, tools and exercises , improved communication is promoted and common goals are established to address any challenges that the relationship may be experiencing.

In couples therapy, both partners are usually worked with together, although there may also be individual sessions. During the sessions, the problems and complications faced by the couple are explored, and solutions are sought to improve communication and the relationship in general. As a coach, I adopt a mediating and facilitating role, and help identify negative patterns of behavior and thinking, providing tools and techniques to overcome them.

How long does a couples therapy session last?

The duration of couples therapy can vary depending on the situation and the needs of the couple, and is generally agreed upon between the coach or psychologist and the clients.

I personally recommend a minimum of 4 sessions to start with, to give yourself some time to work on the topics and apply what you have learned. Then the process can be extended more or less. The sessions last approximately one hour and I like to tell the people I work with to make the most of every minute and euro they invest, as this will contribute to the success of the process.

What do we achieve in Couples Therapy?

You can achieve a significant improvement in communication, more emotional connection , and acquire guidelines for conflict resolution, among other things. You learn to listen better to others, to show more understanding, clarity, empathy, and respect! as well as to set limits and express your needs. You can also reach new conclusions that help you make decisions.

In couples therapy, the main goal is to help couples know how to improve their relationship by finding solutions to their problems . However, in some cases, people may also come to the conclusion that it is better not to be together. In that case, we will work together to explore all the options so that they can make the best decision for themselves. The focus will always be the well-being and happiness of each person.

What topics are covered in Couples Therapy?

A variety of topics can be addressed in couples therapy, depending on the specific needs and challenges of each couple. Some of the common topics addressed in couples therapy include

-lack of communication
-the conflicts
lack of interest or desire
-lack of confidence
-infidelity
-the toxic relationship

-the challenges of motherhood/fatherhood etc… These are just a few examples, as each couple is unique and may have their own challenges and areas of work in therapy. If you want to read more about it, I leave you this link here with more details.

Conclusion:

Couples therapy is not only for overcoming crises and, above all, it is not for making a “last effort”. It serves to “strengthen the relationship, to learn to relate better, to obtain the necessary tools, to understand each other better… To build a stronger, fuller and healthier future”

Don’t underestimate the power of seeking help when you feel like something is not right; it is an act of self-love and mutual love.
