Common problems in couples therapy

As a coach specializing in self-esteem and relationships, I understand that facing challenges in your love life can be a difficult path. In this article, we’ll explore the most common issues that come up in the couples therapy sessions I conduct . Perhaps some of them resonate in your love life too…

1) Lack of communication

Lack of communication is a pervasive issue in relationships. Sessions with a psychologist or coach can help develop effective communication skills , building emotional bridges instead of barriers. Assertive communication is a fundamental pillar in a healthy relationship , which is why it will be an area that, in most cases, will be worked on.

2) Constant conflicts

Conflicts are inevitable, but learning how to manage them is essential. In couples sessions, we work as a team to turn disagreements into opportunities for growth and mutual understanding . In fact, how a couple handles their conflicts speaks volumes about what the relationship itself is like.

3) Lack of interest or desire

Lack of interest or desire can affect the emotional and physical connection and is a very common problem in couples sessions. In this case, the sessions can become a space in which, through conversation and exercises, mutual interest and admiration are activated and this contributes to rekindling the flame , exploring new facets of the couple as well as rebuilding the affected intimacy .

4) Distrust

Trust in oneself, in others and in the relationship is vital , but sometimes it is threatened . In couples therapy, we will delve, without judgment, into the origins of the loss of trust and provide tools to rebuild , little by little, the lost trust in order to create a solid foundation for the future that will also allow us to enjoy the present.

5) Infidelity

Infidelity is a delicate but very common topic in the sessions I conduct with my clients, both individually and as a couple. When addressing infidelity, as a self-esteem and relationship coach, it is essential to approach the topic with empathy, understanding and constructive guidance , generating, from the beginning, a space of trust and zero judgment. It is important that the professional helps create an environment of closeness and openness so that the couple or person feels supported in what they need to let go, share, express…

Throughout the sessions we give space to emotions and thoughts so that, little by little, a path can be opened towards a possible reconstruction after a betrayal.

If you want to read more about how infidelity is addressed in couples therapy, I will publish a post about it soon.

6) Toxic relationship

Toxic relationships can be destructive and are, unfortunately, more common than we think. In this case, sessions with a coach can help identify and change harmful patterns , promoting a healthier relationship.

7) Emotional disconnection

Emotional disconnection is one of the most common problems in couples therapy. In fact, it is a very common challenge that turns us off as a couple, generating a mutual emptiness as well as a certain “leverage” due to the lack of motivation. The result: one evolves in one direction and the other in the other. Does this sound familiar? We will see how therapy can be an effective tool to reconnect, rediscover each other and revitalize the relationship.

8) Challenges of Motherhood/Fatherhood

The arrival of children often brings with it certain complexities in the relationship between couples. In these situations, couples sessions can offer support and strategies to address the changes and challenges that arise at this stage of our lives, also creating a space for relief so that, little by little, and through exercises, this once again provides strength, clarity, calm, oxygen, direction, meaning and union.

Conclusion:

Addressing issues such as lack of communication, conflict, lack of desire, infidelity, and other challenges is not an easy process, but it is essential. In each session, a tapestry of trust and understanding is delicately woven, providing a safe space where couples can confront their shared fears, challenges and hopes.

In fact, every couple is unique, and approaches can be tailored depending on the circumstances and personalities involved.

This makes my profession a fascinating and very challenging mission, since I put myself at the service of each person who hires my services, observing and listening at every moment, to exactly what their needs are.

Of course, the big job falls on the clients, since only the couple, both together and individually, can achieve the objectives they set themselves. My role is to provide tools to contribute to success.
